Oil Based Finish -vs- Water Based Finish Stains & Finishing Tips Let us offer you a few tips on selecting a finishing system for your Hardwood Floors. Hardwood floors add beauty and value to any home. The finish really brings out that natural beauty of the wood and protects it from the use of everyday wear. When it comes to selecting a finish for your flooring, there are a few things you should consider. First there are two basic types of finish - Solvent Based and Waterborne. Waterborne finishes are a relatively new development pioneered by BonaKemi in Sweden. These finishes have a low VOC (Volatile Organic Component) because they use water instead of solvents to carry the urethane molecules. They dry very quickly, approximately 2 to 3 hours, with very little odor. Solvent-based finishes have a high VOC (Volatile Organic Component) content. This finish takes much longer to dry (often 8 hours or more) with a distinct Chemical Odor that can linger for days. If you are finishing a residential floor you may want to consider one of the Waterborne Products, they are the least disruptive to your home life - you'll be able to have the use of your home usually the same day. The next decision to make is the sheen you would like - Glossiness of the Finish. While some people prefer a high gloss finish and others a softer satin finish. Whatever your preference BonaKemi has a finish that's right for you. The final consideration is the cost. While it is true that the Waterborne Products are a bit more expensive, the finishes represent only a small portion of the overall cost of the job.
